To Sir, With Love

40 years (and a few months) ago, E. R. Braithwaite's novel, To Sir, With Love was released as "A Major Motion Picture," starring Sidney Poitier as an engineer immigrant to England who finally lands a job as a high school teacher in a London slum.

I was 10 when it came out. It struck me. So did the book, which was sitting idly in a bookcase. (I have no idea how it got there, as I am sure neither of my parents read it, but it was there when the movie came out.)

I didn't want 'Miss Dare.' I didn't want Lulu. I was 10. I wanted Mark Thackeray (Poitier).

I wanted to be Mark Thackeray. I still do.

I still tear up at the end.

(This is not quite the end)
