In addition to those sources of joy, I also got a terribly cute bear who has not yet deigned to tell me a name...

and a wonderfu book called "the dag's dictionary" which is about words that don't exist but should!

I got myself a present, besides the TV, which I will write about in the very next post, in just a few minutes, after dinner.

And a nice card from my frequent flier program...

Sequels

Some 30+ years ago, I was introduced to a number of fascinating books. Many of them are by authors then or since dead. Eric Van and Nat Herald, principly, are the folks who broadened my reading habits.

Mind you, it is not as if they took me outside of Science Fiction and Fantasy. They didn't. But they showed me so much more in those areas than I had ever known was there before.

One of the books I was introduced to was The Witches of Karres by James H. Schmitz. A hapless, but earnest star ship captain finds himself at the mercy of a group of powerful, mostly benign, albeit mischievous witches. He and they go in and out of trouble - mostly in...

I loved it. I thought the personalities were rich. THe end of the book has the Captain and one of the three going off to figure something out - when the youngest of them shows up, unexpectedly, with a note that she will be needed.

The next book was set up.

I waited.

We all waited.

He died in 1974. Rumors abounded for decades about a lost manuscript with a sequel to this wonderful (if not deep) book. No sequel appeared.

A fwe years ago, Baen Books started reprinting the Schmitz collection of works. Witches of Karres was on the list.

On Saturday, I wondered into Barnes and Noble.

The Wizard of Karres - a sequel! No, it is not by Schmitz, sad as that is. But it is written very much inthe style of Schmitz by Lackey, Flint, and Freer. A good job was done by all!

I enjoyed it, lots. I will probably enjoy it lots more in the future, too.

almost 40 years between publishing the first and the second books in a sequel... odd, but it worked for me!

Free plug: http://www.baen.com/library/defaultTitles.htm has a library of free books to read and/or download by many of their current authors! I commend the site to you!
