Eyes Wide Open

Twice in the relatively recent past, I have had the experience of being next to somebody who was sleeping and who, while s/he was sleeping had eyelids that were not completely shut.
In one case, most of the time only white was showing through the gap in the eyelids. In the other case, I could distinctly see a pupil.
I think the white only was a bit weirder than the pupil showing, even though the latter would seem more odd in terms of vision.
Have you ever been with somebody who was sleeping like that? Do you, yourself, sleep like that?
