The time - Senior year of High School, the Fall of 1973
The place - Manchester Central High School
The events/circumstances - I joined/got involved with the Cross-Country team

In the midst of sorting through the debris that has been left in my room since I moved out of my parent's place in 1977 or so, I came across my certificate of achievement from the awards ceremony at Central. I was given a varsity letter for Cross-Country.

FOr those of you who have met me, this may come as a shock, but let me resolve your fears. I did not run.

At least, I don't think I ran. I have no memory of having run cross-country.

Then again, I only have one memory of having attended a meet - and that is a vague standing in a park holding a clipboard while the runners went by.

Nothing else. Who was the coach? His name is scrawled on the certificate, but otherwise I would not know. I remember one of the runners, sort of - but more for his having been somebody I knew from chess and explorer scouts (yes, I was, and a boy scout, too!) than from running.

Varsity letter. *snort* I SHOULD have gotten one for managing (helping, at least) the soccer team in junior year, at NMH! But I was tossed before the very end of the season.

I also have certificates for baseball and soccer from Derryfield, from 7th - 9th grades. I was good enough in soccer to start on the 9th grade team. THen again, we had to borrow some 8th grade boys to make up a whole team. But on the OTHER other hand, we went undefeated and unscored upon that season...

Not that I remember that, either.

Josh Shaine - JOCK!

Hmm... cross country can be different, though. I mean, the girls on cross-country at my school are jocks, at least most of them (dunno any of the guys), but not everywhere. My grandfather, for instance, was a runner, and he is definitely not a jock - he's an English professor (yeah, pretty much all my family is in academics. *makes face*). And doesn't Crete run? And she certainly doesn't seem like a jock to *me*!
