Unexpected Events
Mar. 13th, 2004 12:43 amI wasn't going to go in with Susan this afternoon. Yeah, she is headed out of town for a few days tomorrow, but I had stuff I was planning to do. And since I was expecting to spend the evening with her, anyway, it was not as if I was not going to get to spend hours withher anyway!
Her mom and sister, whom she was going to visit prior to her trip, had tickets to a concert and were slated to leave their place at 7 - Susan would probably join them for dinner and then head home.
About 3:30 or so, I managed to wrap up getting registered for one of the classes I am taking this term at CLL (professional development seminar), and had done about as much damage on BIQ stuff as I was likely to get done for the day. So, spur of the moemnt, I surprised her by agreeing to go.
We went.
We started in on cleaning off her mom's dining room table - she has been having a hard time sorting through mail, making sure that all the bills get paid, etc. We helped. (I think...)
Over dinner, sister expressed tiredness - and a certain reluctance to go to the show. Mom was tired, too - wanted to go, but not to drive back afterwards. Sister would possibly go... Hm - there is also Master and Commander playing - and at the same building as the concert! Susan had wanted to see that on the big screen. Did I want to go? DId I want to go to the concert?
Now, I have no real problem with spontaneous planning - not when the spontaneous plans are ones I want. But I DID have in mind to go home, do at least a LITTEL work on my HSSP classes prior to teaching them tomorrow! And I didn;t have the driving interest in seeing the flick that Susan did. I was a ibt more interested in the possibility of the concert - but as much as anything, what through me off was Susan's embrace of any of these notions.
It seems that Susan had been thinking of our possibly going to see a movie, anyway. She merelyt had not shared any of that with me! And she traditionally complains when too little notice is given for change in plans - like going to a movie, with no advance warning! (And getting her to go to them at all is hard work - it is a major treat for her. Or maybe just a big deal.)
She went to the movie. Mom and I went to the concert.

The concert:
Kate and Anna McGarrigle were playing at the Somerville Theater. They are folk musicians who have been around for a good long while - and I enjoy their music. (http://www.concertedefforts.com/artists_mcga.asp) I have never bought any of it, but I have several of their albums (vinyl, for those keeping score at home) and know some of their music. I listen to them on WUMB. (public folk music, and they stream!)
It was a great concert - their general irreverance is a delight to listen to - the french version of Little Boxes (made of Ticky Tacky) was quite entertaining. Indeed, the evening was fine. Susan's move started earlier and finished earlier than the concert - we had 2 encores. Susan was allowed to listen to the last 30+ minutes of the concert.
She liked the movie, too - though she missed the first ten minutes or so. ("Psst! What did I miss?" "Oh... they sailed!")
Afterwards, we dropped her mom off and headed home.

Driving along route 2, westbound, approaching Rte 495, a car whizzed past me. Now I was probably over the speed limit - though not hugely so. This car was easily 20 mph faster than mine! (33kph)
Less than a minute later, that car dives to the right, bounces off the guard rail, across the two lanes, spins, and then drives head first into the rail again, before finishing facing the reverse direction it was supposed to.
The mini-van it did its dance around managed to neither hit nor be be hit - but it was a close thing!
We called emergency immediately - the state police have a barracks less than 3 miles from there - only took them 10 minutes to get there! (grrrrr!)
Nobody seriously hurt. Debris in the road. A shaken up driver of the mini-van. But that was about all.

We gave our report to the police and went home. And now, I am supposed to focus on class prep.
