Earlier today, I was greeted with an IM asking me if I still had a job, as one of my friends had been fired.

I responded that as far as I knew, I did. And that was true. But I was disturbed by the news and put in a call to my boss - I wanted to know why he had been fired.

He did not call me back until around 6:30pm, many hours later. During that time, I talked with the wife of another friend who had NOT been let go - and she and I talked about stuff.

When my boss called, he said "I assume you've read the letter."

"Letter?" I replied, though prettty sure at that point what he meant. Sure enough, he informed me that I had been fired. As had my mom. Now, another person pointed out that if it is 'without cause' that is a lay off, not a firing - but if it is ending a contract, then formally, I suppose it is neither.

Fuck that - I was fired.

At least they did not do to me what they did to my friend - have him come up from PA to NYC, "for a status meeting" when they were intending to fire him. OTOH, they DID tell him personally, rather than by either letter or accident. And, of course, my friend, the wife? She knew the whole time we were talking... but had been asked by her husband not to tell me because he wanted it to be done the right way.

The right way? When has that company done ANYTHING the right way?

Well, either way, I am free of them. They are free of me.

Why am I not happier about this?
