Assumptions
May. 10th, 2004 10:31 pmIt remains to me a puzzle about ourselves the degree to which we engage in fooling ourselves into thinking what is going on - with others, with ourselves, with the world.
We listen to what others say, then run it through a filter that puts it into something closer to what we expect to hear. Then, when we get contrary feedback, it creates a caucophonous reaction, a loud noise in our psyches. Anger, hurt, betrayal.
This is not a note about one situation or another. It is a composite, both professional and personal, with multiple parts to each.
It is easier to make decisions based on preconceptions than to hear what is really being said or done.
Perhaps THAT is what makes us human.
