Minor twists and petty annoyances
May. 3rd, 2004 06:29 pmI received a solicitation letter, seeking money for a school that I went to for three years.
Up until recently, they sent their notes to Joshua Shaine, which might explain why I really didn;t feel as if the school and I had connected. If it had been my final high school, with 2400+ students in a 9th-12th grade public institution, it would be understandable. But this was a school with 180 kids in a 7th - 12th grade school. Getting a student's name wrong is just bad.
OTOH, so is the letter they sent out seeking donations. But before I get to that part, an observation on the passing of time. One of their faculty is retiring after 32 years - and the fundraiser is for a scholarship fund that has been established as tribute to him, though not in his name.
But, you see, I did not have this man as a teacher. He had not even started their during my 3 years - he joined the year after I left. *sigh*
So, on to the letter.
It has a box on the RSVP form for specifying how much money you are giving and what your role with the school is or was.
I am a:
__ Past Parent
__ Current Parent
__ Grandparent
__ Alumni (Year _____)
In the immortal words of many folks I know, "WTF?!"
"I am a alumni?" First of all, it whould be "I am an alumni. Secondly, Alumni is the plural form of Alumnus. You are not "AN alumni!" You can be part of a group of them - but even then, only if you are MALE, since Alumnus is the male term and Alumna is the female SINGUALR term.
If they are going to bother separating current and past parents, then why not alumni/alumnae? Perhaps "Alumnus/a" or "Alumnus/a" would do the trick! Regardless, it just seems wrong for a school to send out requests for moeny with bad grammar and bad latin in the same request!
